New Listens 10/1 – 10/3: Rage Against the Machine, Free Nationals, King Krule

Happy October. LOL. Get it.

Only feel like music you think you might like? I get it. Use these links to jump to reviews from  Rage Against the Machine (How to define? Rap/Rock/Political?), Free Nationals (R&B, Groovy), and King Krule (Melancholic British Alternative Indie Rock, mf).

Rage Against the Machine – XX (Rap/Rock/Political)

FUCK YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME! Rage Against the Machine is a band that’s had a legacy built for themselves through many a Trumpee blaring their music at the rallies and completely missing the point. This band is so iconic and needs no introduction.

I deeply respect them as an idea – like, all for the political movement stuff, and their causes are good ones. However, am I going to put Rage Against the Machine in the rotation? Absolutely not. I am not going to lift any of this stuff into Rabies, and it’s really just not replay-able music at all. I’m not sure how to put a bow on these thoughts. Yee

Favorite songs: Killing in the Name

Free Nationals – Self titled (Groovy/R&B)

Better known to many as Anderson Paak’s band (yes, the one featured in his Tiny Desk), The Free Nationals are an incredible quartet of musicians who, in 2019, released their debut album that features incredible artists from across the modern day landscape, including Daniel Caesar, Mac Miller, Kali Uchis, and more.

This is one of the best “compilation” albums, using that term lightly, with grooves from all across the landscape – R&B, Dreamy, Reggae, and more. If you are a music lover you should definitely check this one out. It’s fun, the features are great, and the Free Nats are just super talented. Love it!

Favorite songs: Beauty & Essex, On Sight, Shibuya, Apartment, Gidget, Time, Eternal Light

King Krule – 6 Feet Beneath the Moon (Melancholic British Alternative Indie Rock)

You heard that right, motherfucker. And yes, I’m doing a funny here, but this really is a genre of music that is not simply King Krule. It’s literally Melancholid British Alternative Indie Rock. It’s dominated by lower pitch male voices, funky and spacious guitar chords, and songwriting that’s certainly out of the box. King Krule is one of the most popular artists in this space, and while I like some of his music, if you looked at me dead in the eyes and said “this is dogshit” I would understand. It’s certainly an acquired taste. You’ll see another man in this lane later in this blog who I much prefer.

Favorite songs: Baby Blue, Neptune Estate, Out Getting Ribs

One response to “New Listens 10/1 – 10/3: Rage Against the Machine, Free Nationals, King Krule”

  1. RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE: Maybe not on heavy rotation, yet this song, “Killing in the name of” is perfect for almost any occasion (well, maybe not Baptisms, har!) but, you know: dancing, working-out, laundry, driving, mood-regulation, head-bobbing, et cetera.

FREE NATIONALS: I respect Paak, and respect your recommendation even more, so will def have a thorough listen.

KING KRULE: This whole review (and new lane) is hilarious. Not bad, not bad.
